Bitcoin’s total mining hashrate is closing in on 1 zettahash per second, a network-scale milestone reached even as AI data centers compete for the electricity, land, and hosting capacity that once flowed almost entirely to Bitcoin miners, squeezing production margins toward breakeven.

The Bitcoin network has been hovering just below the symbolic 1 ZH/s threshold, confirming that the raw computing power securing the chain remains near record territory. CoinDesk reported on March 30, 2026 that hashrate was down about 4% year to date and hovering near 1 ZH/s, the first quarterly decline in six years, as miners redirected capital toward AI infrastructure. At the same time, Bitcoin traded around US$78,138 at press time, up 0.44% over 24 hours. That price sits just below the average cost many public miners report to produce a single coin, the crux of the current margin problem. For related coverage, see Bitcoin Market Update: Price, Network and Institutional Signals | September 1, 2026.

What to Know About Bitcoin Hashrate Nearing 1 ZH/s

Hashrate measures the total number of computational guesses miners make each second as they compete to add the next block. It is the clearest proxy for how much mining hardware, and therefore energy and capital, is actively securing the network. For related coverage, see Bitcoin Market Update: Price, Network and Institutional Signals | Evening August 31, 2026.

  • The milestone: The network is near 1 ZH/s, or one trillion billion hashes per second, after first crossing that line in late August 2025 and peaking near 1,160 EH/s in early October 2025.
  • The caveat: Higher hashrate signals network security and miner participation, not miner profitability. The two can move in opposite directions.

One zettahash per second is a symbolic threshold because it marks a thousandfold step up from the exahash era that defined the prior cycle. It reflects both more efficient machines and continued capital deployment, but it says nothing on its own about whether the miners running those machines are making money.

That distinction matters more now than at any point since the last halving, a tension visible in daily price, network and institutional signals where record security coexists with strained economics.

Why AI Data Centers Are Making Mining Economics Harder

The core mechanism is power cost. AI and high-performance computing operators bid aggressively for the same low-cost electricity and grid interconnection that Bitcoin miners depend on, and they can often pay more per megawatt because their revenue per unit of power is higher.

CoinShares reported that the weighted average cash cost to produce one bitcoin among publicly listed miners rose to approximately US$79,995 in the fourth quarter of 2025. With spot Bitcoin near US$78,000, many public miners are producing coins at or slightly above their cash cost.

Public-Miner Cash Cost
US$79,995
This cost benchmark frames why weaker hashprice and competition from AI data-center demand have compressed miner profitability.

Hashprice, the daily revenue a miner earns per unit of computing power, tells the same story. It fell from roughly US$36 to US$38 per petahash per second per day in Q4 2025 to about US$29 per petahash per second per day in Q1 2026, leaving many operators near breakeven.

The economic response has been decisive. CoinShares said more than US$70 billion in cumulative AI and HPC contracts have been announced across the public mining sector, and it estimated some listed miners could derive as much as 70% of revenue from AI by the end of 2026. James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, said AI is continuing to compete for rack space in many data centres.

The market’s repricing of miners with AI exposure underscores how tightly the two industries are now linked, with company-specific filings moving mining-sector benchmarks sharply.

What Rising Hashrate and Thinner Margins Mean for Bitcoin Miners Next

Higher aggregate hashrate raises the difficulty of finding blocks, which spreads the same fixed block subsidy across more computing power. That structurally intensifies competition, so miners with the highest power costs feel the squeeze first.

Smaller operators and those on legacy hardware or higher electricity tariffs are most exposed. Margin compression typically forces efficiency upgrades, fleet consolidation, or relocation to cheaper power, and increasingly a pivot into AI hosting where per-megawatt economics are stronger.

That capital reallocation now competes for attention with pure accumulation plays such as corporate Bitcoin treasury purchases, showing how differently listed firms are positioning around the same asset.

Sentiment across the broader market remains constructive despite the miner strain, with the Fear & Greed Index at 69, in “Greed” territory. That gap illustrates the core point: a network can look strong and priced with optimism while the businesses securing it operate on razor-thin margins.

The near-1 ZH/s reading confirms Bitcoin’s security budget and difficulty remain near all-time highs even as the first hashrate dip in six years signals strategic reallocation rather than distress. Whether the next difficulty epoch resumes its climb or stalls will depend heavily on how many miners choose AI revenue over marginal hashpower.
